RECEPTION TEST AND MONITORING SYSTEM OF THE NEW MARGHERA CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE IN THE HARBOUR OF VENICE

The paper presents the results of a recent experimental investigation carried out on the new curved cable-stayed bridge erected in Porto Marghera-Venice, Italy. The special geometric layout of the bridge and its infrastructural role provided strong motivations for both the installation of a permanent monitoring system and the execution of accurate (static and dynamic) reception tests.Specifically, the paper describes the characteristics of the monitoring system, based on the use of the SOFO? Fiber optic sensor family and conceived for both static and dynamic monitoring. The monitoring system was installed during construction in order to monitor the bridge response during erection and service life. Furthermore, static load tests and ambient vibration survey have been performed before the bridge opening; the data collected during the dynamic tests allowed to better understand the dynamic characteristics of the full-scale bridge and provided a verification of the accuracy of the natural frequencies identified from the data of the monitoring system.
