REDUNDANCE AND VULNERABLE FAILURE MODE ANALYSES FOR LIFECYCLE MONITORING OF BRIDGE STRUCTURES
Structural vulnerability, which is defined as the ratio between the local damage and the consequences of that damage to a structural system, is an opposite concept of robustness which means the capability to resistant disproportionate collapse. The objective of vulnerability assessment of a structural system is to find the most vulnerable failure modes to some unexpected perturbation and is useful for structural monitoring system design, performance evaluation and disaster reduction analysis. In this study, a technique for analyzing the vulnerability of truss structures is proposed. It includes a failure mode search algorithm based on the redundancy or topological layout analysis of the system and a damage demand analysis to determine the most vulnerable failure modes. To evaluate the proposed technique, a numerical case study on a truss bridge is presented to illustrate all of the main points.
