Impact and Ambient Vibration Testing of a New Highway Bridge
A newly constructed two-span highway bridge, Bridge No. 1487 on the Roe Highway in Perth, Western Australia, was tested with both hammer impact excitation and ambient vibration excitation. The Multiple Reference Impact Testing (MRIT) technique and Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI) are applied to the impact testing and ambient vibration test, respectively, to extract the modal parameters of the bridge. The results from the two methods are comparable and consistent. It shows that the bridge is more like two independent simply-supported structures, rather than a continuous two span structure, indicating that the joints connection in the central support is not rigid.
