VISUAL INSPECTION AND EVALUATION FOR SPECIAL BRIDGES

Many recent bridges constructed in Taiwan have various types of structures other than traditional concrete bridges, such as steel bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and steel-concrete compound bridges.These special bridges also need inspection to determine relevant maintenance tasks. However, the DER&U methodology, currently used for inspecting concrete bridges in Taiwan, is not suitable for inspecting these special bridges. This research focuses on the processes of modifying the DER&U methodology for these special bridges. Inspection criteria for bridge components and the standards for evaluation will be examined and demonstrated for steel, cable-stayed, and compound bridges. The modified DER&U methodology will be incorporated into the Taiwan Bridge Management System, in which many special bridges exist in its 25,000 bridges inventory, in the near future.
