STUDIES ON THE STRENGTHENING METHOD OF BEAM BRIDGE WITH CFRP SHEETS AND ENLARGE-SECTION COMBINED FOR LIFE CYCLE USE
In this paper, strengthening method to the multi-beam bridge of bonding CFRP sheets together with enlarging cross-section is presented. One 12.6m span expressway concrete bridge built in the 1990s can not meet the load requirements after the new asphalt overlaid, and the bridge should be reinforced.Consequently, strengthening method of bonding CFRP sheets together with enlarging cross-section is studied, and the method is applied on the bridge. Cross-section is enlarged by replacing the original concrete pavement which is non-stress and damaged with integral reinforced concrete layer. The newly cast in situ concrete bonded to original beams by shear connectors between them. CFRP is bonded at the bottom of beams when original pavement is removed, or the permanent load of the super structure reach minimum. Also load test is carried out after the strengthening and paving work finished. The results of load testing and FE analysis indicate the stiffness and bearing capacity as well as transverse connection between main beams are improved. The method represented does not affect deck height level and utilizes the high strength property of CFRP effectively. The method can provides reference to similar bridge strengthening for the purpose of life cycle use.
