MAINTENANCE REPAIR METHODS AND COST OPTIMIZATION IN HIGHWAY STRUCTURES
The major financial burden of highway structures is not the construction cost but the maintenance cost along its service life. Different repair methods during the maintenance period result in different cost. Some methods are expensive but provide a longer maintenance life and minimize further inspections and repairs frequencies. In contrast, some of them are economical but offer a shorter maintenance life resulting in more frequent inspections and repair acts. In a limited fund, a proper maintenance and repair strategy not only can prioritize the maintenance sequences and select appropriate remedial actions in the highway structure stock by optimizing the cost and benefit of different actions, but also can maintain the service life of the structure at an acceptable performance standard. This paper addresses different maintenance and repair methods of highway structures commonly adopted in Hong Kong. Maintenance strategy in Canada and UK are also briefly addressed.
