Technological Diversification and Innovation: An Empirical Analysis for Chinese ITTOP 100 Firms
This paper analyses the impact of technological diversity on innovative activities at the firm level. The empirical study on a panel of Chinese IT Top100 firms shows that the R&D intensity decreases with the degree of technological diversification of the firm when measured by inventions, and increases when measured by utility models. Possible causes relate to patent regimes, life cycles of the Chinese ICT sector and sectoral innovation system. The paper provides empirical evidence relevant to the diversity -specialization innovation debate.
