Using Enterprise Portfolio Management to Drive Shareholder Value
Portfolio management is one of the core elements of Total Innovation Management (TIM). Hewlett-Packard (HP) has been shown to be a company that follows the principles of TIM. Portfolio management has a long history and good track record in functional applications such as R&D, new product development and IT. The methodologies for project & program evaluation, decision & risk analysis and portfolio optimization are by now well established in these functional portfolios. Top management of an organization however has a higher challenge: to ensure the best use of scarce resources in terms of return on investment and shareholder value creation at all levels of their organization, starting with their business groups, strategic business units and corporate functions.This presentation discusses how to design and implement a portfolio management and investment optimization process at the highest level of an enterprise and to link it consistently with established portfolio management processes at lower levels in the organization. The presentation specifically will cover:· HP as a TIM company and history of portfolio management at HP· Best practices for portfolio management and optimization overall· Best practice portfolio management process at the R&D/NPD level· Designing a best practice portfolio management process at the business level· Linking business portfolio management to business strategy· Linking business portfolio management to functional portfolio management· How to optimize the enterprise portfolio and the value it creates· Innovative portfolio displays to inform management decision makingHP is in the early stages of implementing enterprisewide portfolio management. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of where we are in our journey and where we intend to go, with participants sharing insights from their own portfolio management journeys.
