Innovation by Network: Empirical Evidence from the Software Industrial Cluster in Hangzhou

Inter-firm network has been considered as an important means for innovations. Since network types can be classified into formal and informal ones, whether these two forms of networks have the same effects on the firms innovation process is an interesting problem. Based on this point, we take knowledge as a media and investigate how network forms influence the firms innovation process. By using UCINET as a tool for the network analysis, we test our hypotheses about the relationships between network structure and knowledge flow. The results show that both explicit and tacit knowledge are key factors in the firms innovation process, however the tacit knowledge has a more weight in its contribution Our study also shows while the explicit knowledge is influenced by the formal network, the tacit knowledge flows mainly in an informal network.
