Influential Factors of Choosing Technology Acquisition Mode in New Product Development of Enterprise
Increasing hostile competition required the enterprise should develop the most appropriate new products in the shortest time, so how to acquire the needed technology is very important to an enterprise today. In this study, broad categories of technology acquisition modes are grouped into three modes by the extent of a firms R&D involvement: In-house R&D, R&D cooperation, and technology purchasing. The model of enterprise decision to technology acquisition mode is constructed from three characteristics of technology, firm and environment. On the basis of the model, empirical analysis is conducted by using the sample of the Chinese Information Technology industry through questionnaire. The results indicate that the characteristics of the technology, firm and environment which include technology life cycle, developing cost, uncertainty of technology, technical position, need for new technology, R&D strength, history pattern of the choice of the mode, market size, extent of competition, appropriability regime and government support system all have impacts on the choice of technology acquisition modes. However, contrary to the former researches, the characteristics of the technology are more important than the others in this study. And the uncertainty of technology is the most significant factor. R&D experience has no significant effect on the choice of the three- technology acquisition, which is different from the results of the previous research. Finally, the limitation and future research suggestion are proposed.
