Outsourcing in New Product Development and Its Impact on Module Identification
Module identification is one of the key issues in designing modular product family and product platform. With the increase of component outsourcing in new product development, its impact on product modularity should be analyzed. A module identification methodology is proposed in considering the optimization of firms development related resources. Firstly, two types of product development resources affecting the process of modularity are classified, one is the design related factor such as product function and structure, the other is the manufacture related factor such as component suppliers. Subsequently, an interactive modularity planning model using fuzzy clustering identification is proposed based on the consideration of design and manufacture related resource factor. Thirdly, an evaluation algorithm is given to select the optimal module family. Finally, the design of a modular machine tool is used as an example to describe this method.
