Digitalization of the Textile Industries in China and India——A Comparative Study of Technology Evolution and Adaptation
The textile industries in China and India are both undergoing the transformation from the traditional manufacturing and management models to the new business models featured by digital technology. However, the transforming processes in these two countries have shown significant and interesting differences. In China, the market of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software is growing faster than CRM (Customer Relations Management), whereas the CRM is booming in Indian market.The difference is first caused by the different sizes of the enterprises. The Chinese textile factories are usually 5-6 times larger than the Indian ones in terms of capacity. The management of different scale manufacturing requires different digital tools. Second the size reflects the various business models. Chinese enterprises focus on mass production of standard products while Indians stress on customization. Various nature of production again needs various software and hardware. Moreover, the early technology development paths, which are formed by the different business models, also define the adaptation of new digital technology. Besides, the national technological contexts are necessarily influencing the technology upgrading in the textile industries.Meanwhile the introduction of digital technology is on the one hand enhancing some of the traditional advantages, on the other hand reshaping the industry so that there will be more direct competition between both countries. With IT technology, the Chinese companies can make their production more flexible to enter the high-margin customization market, whereas the Indians are trying to integrate the process to realize mass production. A proper digitalization process will largely decide the future success of the textile countries in both countries.
