Developing Engineering Capabilities in the Chinese Automotive Industry: A Survey Study of the Effect of Firm Size and Ownership Type

Developing engineering capabilities is critical for gaining and sustaining competitive advantage for automotive firms. The outcome of a firms capability development process is hinged upon many factors such as its motivation to learn, its strategies for capability development, and its contextual factors that facilitate capability development. However, few studies have investigated the antecedents of these factors.In this study, by surveying automotive firms located in China, I investigate the effects of two important firm attributes, firm size and firm ownership type (e.g., SOE, JV, WOFE, private firms), on the motivational, strategic, and contextual factors as well as the outcome of a firms engineering capability development.
