Innovating SME Offshore Outsourcing to Emerging Economies

The central issue addressed in this paper is that for Western Small & Medium Sized Enterprises outsourcing to emerging economies provides a range of difficulties including finding the most suitable partner(s), establishing trust and developing the relationship. Though such difficulties are known they have not yet been rendered into adaptations in the offshore outsourcing practice. This results in high learning costs and sometimes failure, leading to the research question: What to innovate in offshore outsourcing in emerging economies? Focusing on the manufacturing industry the paper first presents the definitions used. Next, it discusses different models and presents a framework using a process management view. Using this model, a set of case studies in different Asian countries is reviewed and analyzed, resulting in a number of difficulties. These are then used to define two sets of innovations, one set for practical implementation and one for theory development. The conclusions present the essence of the proposed innovations.
