Why Does Some Knowledge Diffuse Faster and More Broadly than Other: Evidence from Patenting in the Field of Information Storage Technology

While prior research has shown that knowledge spillovers are highly localized within national boundaries, we explore the factors influencing the propensity and rate of international knowledge diffusion. Using patent citations as a proxy measure for knowledge diffusion, we test our hypotheses in the context of the information storage technology, which has experienced rapid technological change and industry globalization over the last 3 decades. Our results showed that, at the patent level, knowledge with high technological impact diffuses faster and broader than low impact knowledge. While the knowledge originating institutions technological reputation promotes the diffusion of its knowledge, its efforts at internal appropriation reduce the propensity and rate of its knowledge spillovers to other countries.
