Regional Gap of R&D in China: An Empirical Study
This paper aims to reveal the characteristics of spatial distribution of the regional R&D expenditure as well as its fluctuation trends in China. With the methods of spatial concentration, variation coefficient, Gini coefficient and etc., the authors analyze both regional total R&D expenditure and its two components, or governmental R&D expenditure and business R&D expenditure. The paper comes to the conclusions including: (1) In general, R&D expenditure agglomerates spatially in China and the situation remains almost unchanged during 1998-2004; (2) Governmental R&D expenditure appears to be more agglomerative (than business R&D expenditure) with a tendency of spatial equilibrium simultaneously; and (3) While business R&D expenditure was initially less agglomerative, it is characterized with a tendency of more and more spatial non-equilibrium.
