B2B Online Operators: Business Models and Strategic Trends in the International Market

In the last years, worldwide B2b online operators (i.e. Web-sites have gone through a lot of changes in their strategies and business models, with the aim of providing real value to the company users in different supply chains. Therefore, it is useful to examine the role of these operators with different B2b company strategies. The paper gives a picture of the B2b online operators in the worldwide landscape presenting the results of an empirical study covering more than 30 international online B2b operators, analyzed through case studies based on direct interviews. Two main variables are considered to analyze the business models of online operators: (i) B2b processes supported by the online operator (i.e. eSourcing, eCatalog, eSupply Chain Execution and eSupply Chain Collaboration), and (ii) the services distribution model (i.e. Orthodox Model, ASP Model, Process Outsourcer Model). The empirical analysis shows a high level of heterogeneity in the B2b landscape, with different business models, characterized by different value propositions; critical success factors (CSFs) and trends.
