Flexible Strategy Built on Modular Innovation Networks
In the era of information and knowledge economy, it is highly important for excellent enterprises to cultivate dynamic capabilities that reconfigure division innovation resources quickly. Flexible strategy which built on modular innovation networks is a significant and novel domain to explore the way of sustainable development. Modular innovation network is a complex innovation system consisting of several key ingredients and layers. The four key ingredients consist of modular disintegration of holistic complex innovation systems, decomposable semi-independent modular innovation agents, IT infrastructure and synergy mechanism of modular networks across enterprises internal and external borders. And the layers involve operation level, dynamic alliance level and industrial organization level. Systemic modular disintegration always leads to modular organizations (Glenn Hoetker, 2006) which are semi-independent innovation agents depending on outer synergetic networks. On the premise of keeping to standards of systemic interfaces, modular innovation agents can carry out independently the design, R&D and manufacturing of decomposable components by organizing flexible working teams. Based on above pattern, modular innovation agents can realize the crucial encapsulation of their core technologies and know-how, and their flexibility through supplying a series of modular products and services for different requirements of upper innovation systems. So the modular innovation network provides an open infrastructure for flexible strategy because it can quickly reconfigure modular units to achieve flexible goals without increasing exorbitant costs.
