Investment, Technological Absorption and Innovation: An Empirical Study on the Shenyang Equipment Manufacture Industry

The development of innovation capacity in Chinese firms does not improve rapidly after technologies transferred for several years, which limits their competencies in the market with sharp competition and have gained more attention. Thus, based on previous research, this paper discusses the relationships among the investment, technology introduction, absorption, innovation and even the saving of cost, by carrying out an empirical study of the equipment manufacture industry around Shenyang City in the Old Industrial Base. The questionnaire returns from the firms in large and middle size that have technology introduction projects during the period of Ninth five-years are analyzed, primarily using the ordinary least squares regressions to seek the relationships between the various technology input and innovation output, such as new products, increased income and declined production cost. The results show that introducing more advanced technology can bring absorption and innovation capability; and in the short-term, the more input on the technique will decrease the new products value. Finally, On the basis of the empirical analysis including other conclusions, a discussion for promoting firms technological innovation are presented, which will be the reference for supporting and guiding scientific technology policy.
