Study of Human Resource Flexibility and Firm Performance
There is a positive association between high performance work systems (HPWS) and firm performance which showed by a large number of empirical strategic human resource management (SHRM). Many researchers have strongly suggested that to advance this field, the SHRM research should focus on the study of the black box (i.e., explicating the mediating mechanisms) between HPWS and firm performance. Although HR flexibility is a key construct that can let scholars to gain a better understanding of the process through which SHRM creates extra value for the firm, a valid measure of the HR flexibility construct has not been developed to date. The paper defined two kind of HR flexibility, HRS flexibility (flexibility in regard to HR systems) and HRC flexibility (flexibility in regard to human resource competencies). It was founded that HPWS and flexibility-oriented competitive strategy were positively associated with HRS flexibility, and HRS flexibility was positively associated with HRC flexibility, which illuminated the fact that HR flexibility and firm performance were positively associated.
