IPR, Modularity and the Organization Mode of the KIBS Activity
Knowledge-Intensive Business Service (KIBS) industry is a helpful facilitator in improving the National System of Innovation (NSI). However what is the main reason leads to the appearance of the KIBS industry is still underconclusion. This paper tries to study what are the main factors that influence the selection of the organization mode of the KIBS activities. We point that there are two kinds of organization mode of KIBS activities. One is the independent KIBS firm who matches the producer users service needs by supplying the KIBS. The other mode called the integrative mode, which means the industrial users do KIBS activity themselves. The aim of this paper is to see in which condition KIBS activities will be carried out by the independent KIBS firm.As the main output of the KIBS activity is knowledge, after analysis the nature of the knowledge trade, we study KIBS users knowledge transfer and produce cost. Then describe what are the main concerns of the suppliers when invest in doing KIBS customization activities. From the point view of the KIBS user, there are different kinds of knowledge transfer and produce costs. Meanwhile to the KIBS suppliers, how they consider weather the investment in the KIBS activities is reasonable in the three stage KIBS trade.Through analyzing how Intellectual Property Right (IPR) and the industrial Modularity influence the KIBS users knowledge produce and transfer cost and KIBS suppliers investment decision in doing KIBS activities customization in three stages of carrying out the technology service contract. We hold that strong IPR protect and the industrial Modularity will lead the selection of independent KIBS firm, which means they will co-help the birth and development of KIBS industry. At the end of the paper is several political and management advices.
