Quantitative Research on Classification of General Institutions of Higher Learning Based on the Layout of Disciplines and Specialties

This paper provides the algorithm of comprehensive coefficient of discipline and specialty for various types of universities, including the Research-oriented, the Research-Teaching-oriented, the Teaching-research-oriented and the Teaching-oriented, in accordance with Conferment of Academic Degrees of Doctor and Master and Contents of Discipline and Specialty for Graduates (enacted in 1997), Contents of Specialty for Undergraduates at General Institutions of Higher Learning (enacted in 1998), and Tentative Contents of Specialty for Junior Colleges and Professional Colleges (enacted in 2004). Through an empirical analysis of the classification of the institutions of higher learning in Liaoning province based on the layout of disciplines and specialties, the author has managed to locate the value spectrum of the comprehensive coefficients for institutions of the comprehensive-typed, the multidiscipline-typed, and the specialized-typed by means of the SPSS software.
