Large Eddy Simulation of Unsteady Flow inside Pump-intake Bays
The unsteady flow inside pump-intake bays is characterized by the intermittent and wandering vortices. These vortices induce highly unsteady swirl and uneven impeller loads, which largely lower the capacity of pumps. Large eddy simulation (LES) is an effective methodology for analyzing large-scale unsteady flow. In this paper, the unsteady flow inside pump-intake bays was investigated by using k-e model, Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) and LES, respectively. The research results indicate that the turbulence flow inside pump-intake bays is in an asymmetric distribution, and two counter-rotating vortices form near the back of the intake tube. The simulated results are generally in agreement with those presented by references. It is also found that there exist some differences among the results obtained from the above-mentioned three models, and LES simulation can offer the most accurate results closing to references.
