Geothermal Reservoir Characterization Integrating Spatial GIS Models of Temperature, Geology, and Fractures
Fracture systems govern the potential of the geothermal reservoirs. Accurate characterization of these fractures is crucial to set proper management plans of the geothermal energy development. However, proper representation of the subsurface fractures requires dense distribution of boreholes with numerous strike and dip measurements on the vertical scale that is often costly and rarely available. Efficient detection and analysis of the earths surface lineaments when interpreted in association with accurate 3D temperature and geologic models could be a promising alternative approach to understand the dominating subsurface dynamics. In the present work, a study area in the Hohi geothermal region in central Kyushu, soudiwest Japan was selected to realize our objective. The surface lineaments were detected from multi-directional hill-shaded 10-m digital elevation model applying a set of techniques for line segment tracing, refining, and grouping algorithms. A 3D optimal (3DOPT) mechanical potential energy minimization and stochastic optimal simulation (OPTSIM) techniques were used to construct the 3D models of the temperature and the geology. GIS integration of the surface lineaments with the subsurface fractures interpreted from discontinuities in both the temperature gradient and the geologic layers clarified the intimate association and well-matching of the location, orientation, and dipping criteria of the long dominant lineaments and the subsurface fractures zones with dominant NW-SE, ENE-WSW, and NNE-SSW structural trends. Geothermal occurrences were characterized and many other interesting features were clarified.
