Fractal Modeling of Sphalerite Banding in Jinding Pb-Zn Deposit
Four bands of sphalerite were identified on using a microscopic image taken from an ore sample from Jinding Pb-Zn deposit, Yunnan, P. R. China. The spatial, frequency and irregularity of the minerals (sphalerite and calcite) are characterized quantitatively by fractal models. Values of fractal dimensions of sphalerite grains calculated by several simple fractal models including box-counting model, and perimeter-area (P-A) model have shown the gradual change from inner to outer bands implying area percentage increases, shape irregularity increases, grain size increases whereas numbers of grains decreases. These results may imply a certain type of self-organization properties involved in the non-linear process of mineralization.
