Delineation and Evaluation on Estimated Blocks in the Calculation Scheme of Cobalt Crust Resources

Outlining the estimated blocks in the calculation scheme of crust resources is the most important factor to influence the reliability of resource quantity. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a method for estimating blocks quantitatively so as to improve the reliability of blocks outlining. Take a certain seamount in the Pacific for examples, using the algorithm based on fractal box dimension(FBD) to compute the seamount DEM (digital elevation modele) data .The results show that most sampling points are distributed on high FBD values areas, generally with no sampling points on low ones. As FED values reflect changes in the characteristics of the local topography, large changes in the high FBD values areas and small changes in the low ones, so we can consider that the cobalt crusts develop in the area with local steep topography and generally with no crusts in the areas with local gently topography. It is consistent with the investigation findings in seabed photos. Therefore, we come to the following conclusions, FBD values of seamount topography can be used to judge the spatial distribution of cobalt crusts, and we have theoretical and methodological basis to delineate estimated blocks through FBD values.
