Fractal Conditional Simulation of Petroleum Resource Abundance and Geographical Location, Nanpu Sag of the Bohai Bay Basin, China

Information of possible geographic locations of undiscovered petroleum accumulations and the associated uncertainty are essential for improving exploration success and efficiency. In this paper we discuss a new method that can simultaneously predict the abundance and possible geographic locations of undiscovered petroleum accumulations in a play. The proposed method is based on fractal theory and conditional simulation, and the basic input data requirements include a probability map of petroleum occurrence and information of existing oil and gas discoveries in the study area. This method transforms the known oil and gas discoveries from a spatial domain to a frequency domain and corrects the sampling bias in the input data set, resulting in a fractal model that represents the abundance of petroleum resources in the play. Additional information regarding the locations of undiscovered oil and gas accumulations from the petroleum bearing probability map is then integrated with the fractal model through a conditional simulation using the Fourier spectrum method. The principle and the evaluation procedure of the method are illustrated through an example that predicts the abundance and possible locations of the undiscovered petroleum accumulations in the Nanpu Sag of the Bohai Bay Basin, China. Validation of the predictions in the well explored onshore area of the Nanpu Sag in the north shows promising results. For the less explored offshore area in the south, the predictions highlight targets with large resource potential and low risk, providing useful information essential for strategic decision of future exploration drilling.
