Q-Mode Analysis of Cyclically Deposited Barakar Coal-Measures of Gondwana Basins, Eastern and Central India

Q-mode cluster analysis is applied method to classify the cyclically deposited Barakar coal-measures from 13 different coalfields of eastern and central Gondwana basins. Results have brought out two distinct clusters on the basis of distance similarity coefficient (dij), and the over all similarities of first-order transition probability values (pij). Cluster X include 4 coalfields representing symmetrical cycles of sandstone→fine sandstone /siltstone→carbonaceous shale→coal→carbonaceous shale whereas, Cluster Y comprises 9 coalfields represented by asymmetrical cycle i.e. sandstone→fine sandstone / siltstone→carbonaceous shale→coal→sandstoneThe development of asymmetrical cycles together with an abundance of sandstone is attributed to abrupt shifting of channel bars in low sinuosity anabranching streams. By contrast, the deposition of symmetrical cycles with sub-equal amount of sandstone, shale+coal is perhaps due to a slow and gradual shift of the sinuous stream channels over and across the adjacent sub-environments of the flood plain.
