Thematic Web-Mapping Potential and Limitations of Google Maps API

Web mapping is used to present spatial data on the World Wide Web. The advantages of digital maps are well known, and the advent of web map services made the full power of digital cartography obvious to the general public. The exploding demand for topographic and thematic maps stimulated internet information services (Yahoo!, Google) to set up their own web mapping services based on their vast data bases. In 2005 Google offered an application programming interface (API) which allows the user to create custom online maps. This service opens up a wide field of applications to earth scientists, especially due to the fact that maps and satellite images in different scales are provided for regions all over the globe which can be utilized as topographic background layers for visualizing personalized spatial data and to disseminate them on the web. This paper presents a short description of Googles Map services and focuses on the application of Google Maps API for personalizing maps. Advantages and limitations of its graphical layout capabilities are summarized, and links to some applications are given.
