BiNem(R) Bistable Nematic Display: Switching Mechanisms and Specific Materials Requirements
The Bistable Nematic (BiNem (R) ) LCD technology developed by the society Nemoptic presents intrinsic long term bistability, passive matrix multiplexing and high optical quality. The BiNem device operation is based on the anchoring breaking in a thin cell under electric field, needing specific anchoring properties of the materials-alignment layers and liquid crystal mixtures. We present here an analysis of the physical mechanisms of the bistable switching and texture selection and Che specific requirements imposed by them to the anchoring and bulk properties of the materials. In both an analytical model and by numerical simulations we study the influence of the anchoring (azimuthal and zenithal anchoring energy, pretilt angle on the two plates, etc.) and bulk nematic properties (anisotropy of the elastic constants and the viscosities) on the device performances, in order to define the target values insuring the optimal functioning of the bistable display.
