A Novel Transparent Cathode for OLEDs
We describe in this paper some preliminary experiments on a new transparent cathode for investigating full-color organic light-emitting diodes OLEDs in the future. Our study is focusing on transparent organic light-emitting diodes (TOLEDs) and stacked organic light-emitting diodes (SOLEDs). We use lanthanum hexa boride (LaB6), a well-known thermionic emitter with a rather low work function of 2.4-3.0 eV, as transparent cathode. Thin LaB6 films have been applied onto an ITO electrode, the film thicknesses varied between 120 and 200 nm. The light transmission depended on the film thickness ; minimum variation of the transmission as a function of wavelength was observed at a film thickness of 150 nm. The work function of the LaB6 films is about 2.6 eV.
