Obtaining High Motion-fidelity in Full-HD LCD-displays
Motion fidelity can be a critical issue in LCD displays. This is particularly true for HDTV and even more for Full HDTV. For HDTV to fulfil its promise also for moving objects, it is best to: record the image with a short shutter time, record and broadcast them at a higher frame rate and display them on an LCD display with a scanning backlight. As long as the higher frame rates are not yet broadcasted one can apply a scanning backlight that locally switches back to a nonscanning mode for (near) static images. As an alternative one can apply motion compensated frame-rate up-con version, which is then best also combined with a scanning backlight. We succeeded in designing and producing a scanning backlights dial enable a significant improvement of motion fidelity and can operate at frame rates up to 120 Hz.
