Motion Blur Analysis, Measurement, and Reduction Using Synchronized Backlight Flashing

Compared to traditional CRT TV, LC TV has the shortcoming of the motion blur. There are two causes for LCD motion blur: (1) LCD slow temporal response and (2) LCD backlight always-on (Hold effect). In our previous papers, we modeled LCD motion blur as temporal point spread function (temporal PSF) of an LCD device. In this paper, we described die experimental results on one of the motion blur reduction methods - backlight flashing. We performed a subjective experiment to quantify the amount of motion blur at various flashing duty cycles. We also measured the LCD output with a high speed camera. Based on die data from an eye tracking experiment, which show almost perfect eye tracking , we determined the spatial extent of this temporal PSF by superimposing the captured frames. The results show a good agreement between the subjective experiment and objective camera measurement. Both experiments support our theoretical analysis that the temporal PSF determines the perceived motion blur.
