Investigation of Flicker Visibility in Impulse Type Displays

The LC response time and hold effect of LCD may cause motion artifacts. A TFT-LCD with a dynamic scanning backlight system is developed to reduce motion blur, while flicker phenomenon is introduced into this system. The aim of the study was to investigate the flicker phenomenon for various settings of the scanning backlight and motion property of the displayed video material in a perception experiment. Results indicate that flicker is clearly perceived in single pulse mode for still images, moving content covering certain range can distract the viewers attention away from flicker. Double pulse mode can reduce flicker visibility for both still and moving content.
