Low Power Double Scanning MFD for Multimedia LCDs
We have developed a novel low power-driving scheme for multi-media LCDs, which we call Double Scanning MultField Driving (DS-MFD), that reduces the driving power consumption by 28% for both static images and moving images in the case of a 14-in LCD with XGA resolution. In the DS-MFD method, for motion images, the displayed images are processed by the double scanning method that two scanning lines are activated simultaneously and for still images, the displayed images are processed by the 2:1 multi-field driving (2:1 MFD) we presented previously1. In addition, in the case of motion images, to overcome a vertical aliasing (flicker) problem, we simulated and optimized digital filtering characteristics and applied the digital filter to the DS-MFD. As a result, we obtained high quality motion and high quality static images.
