New π-Conjugated Polyaryleneethynylenes (PAEs) Comprising of Fluorene and Bis(perfluorohexyl) benzene Units. An Investigation of the Effect of Fluorine-Wt% on the Optoelectronic Properties of the Polymers

A series of new p-conjugated poly(aiyleneethynylene)s (PAEs) comprising of fluorene and bis(perfluorohexyl)benzene units were synthesized by the polycondensation of 2,7-diethynyl-9,9-dioctylfluorene with 2,7-dibromo-9,9-dioctylfluorene and different mol% of 2,5-dibromo-l ,4-bis(perfluorohexyl) benzene using Pd(PPh3)4 and CuI as the catalysts. The polymers were soluble in common organic solvents and gave a range of the number-average molecular weights ( Mn) from 6 800 to 42 000. The optical and electrochemical properties of the polymers were dependent on the mol% of bis(perfluorohexyl)benzene (BFB) unit in the polymers. E. g. , when the mol% was5, 25, 40 and 50% , respectively, the fluorescence quantum yield (FQY) of the polymers increased from 63% of poly (9,9-dioctylfluoreneethynylene) (PFE) to 73, and 81, 88 and 92% of the copolymers, respectively, suggesting that introducing BFB unit was able to greatly enhance the FQY of PFE. Electrochemically, the BFB-containing PFE showed lower reduction potential than PFE. All fluorine-containing polymers have good thermal stability. To investigate the electroluminescent properties of the polymers , two non-optimized devises were fabricated using PFE and a PFE-based polymer containing 25-mol% of BFB unit as the emitting layers, respectively. The results indicated that the latter showed higher brightness and current efficiency than the former.
