Stabilization of Eu-doped BAM by Plasma Processing

The stabilization of BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ (BAM: Eu2+ ) phosphor by plasma processing has been investigated. We present here the improvement on luminance and lifetime of BAM: Eu2+ phosphor under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation. Both photoluminescence (PL) and thermoluminescence (TL) intensities of BAM: Eu2+ decrease by heat treatment in air. However, their intensities of thermally-degraded samples recover slightly after hydrogen plasma treatment. It is considered that the Eu3+ ions which are created by heat treatment in air are recoverd to Eu2+ ions by hydrogen plasma treatment. Futhermore, it is found that the VUV lifetime of BAM; Eu2+ is also improved by hydrogen plasma treatment. This new plasma processing for blue phosphor is applicable for plasma display.
