The Effect of Molecular Weight of Polymer Matrix on Electro-optical Properties of Polymer-dispersed Liquid Crystal Film
The electro-optical properties and memory effects are the important characters of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) devices. In this paper, PDLC films were doped with chain transfer agent (CTA), in order to control the molecular weight of polymer matrix. Macromolecular trithiocarbonate (MT) and n-dodecanethJol (DT) were used as CTAs. It was found that the addition of CTA induced a decrease of molecular weight. When DT was used as CTA, morphology of liquid crystal was influenced by the amount of DT; while MT was used, morphology of liquid crystal was unchanged with prolonging the irradiation time. The threshold and saturated voltage decreased with an decrease of molecular weight. In addition , the effect of molecular weight on memory effect of PDLC devices was also discussed. It was observed that the increased flexibility of polymer chain with the molecular weight enhanced entanglement between polymer and liquid crystal, which reduced the memory effect.
