The Calcium Test as a Tool for Water-vapor Barrier Evaluation of Flexible Barrier Substrates

The water vapor barrier property of flexible substrates used in flexible electronics and display applications is one of the most stringent requirements of these substrates. Substrate suppliers, film converters and device manufacturers need to measure the water permeability of the films in order to be able to evaluate raw materials quality, assess device lifetime or identify potential failure sources. The calcium test functions as a tool to measure the water permeability of film substrates, but it also provides an insight into the failure mechanism of the former. This presentation gives an overview of the principles of this technique, which has now been extensively adopted by the display industry. Two methods describe how the data generated by accelerated aging of the calcium cells can be exploited. A one-dimensional model based on gas diffusion kinetics in polymers is used to compute a pseudo steady-state water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) for a barrier-coated flexible polymer sample.
