Visual Effects and Discomfort While Scrolling a Document on LCD Displays

The LCD display has made mobile computing popular. One application of mobile computing is information browsing. Browsing text and graphics information often requires scrolling the screen display. Today, many software provide tools for the user to scroll the text easily. They also provide zooming tools to magnify or shrink what was shown on the screen. Combining the scrolling and zooming tools, users can search freely in the entire text. However, it is sometimes annoying by continuously viewing information that is moving. Users may feel uncomfortable on the eyes with fast scroll speed. Under fast speed, if the texts are too small, they are unrecognizable. If the texts are big, they become blurred causing discomfort on the eye. In this study, an experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of scroll speed and zoom level on users visual performance and fatigue when viewing a text document on the LCD display. The results show that zoom level significantly affected the visual fatigue of the viewer. It is recommended that document viewing tool must take the visual discomfort into design consideration.
