Near-infrared Quantum Cutting through Down-conversion in Y3Al5O12: RE3+ , Yb3+ ( RE =Tb, Tm, Pr) Nanophosphors

We have demonstrated efficient near-infrared quantum cutting in Y3A15O12: Tb, Yb, Y3A15O12: Tm, Yb, and Y3A15O12: Pr, Yb nanophosphors, which involves the conversion of the visible photon from Tb3 + , Tm3 + or Pr3 + into the near-infrared of Yb3 + emission with the optimal quantum efficiency approaching 200%. The dependence of the Yb3 + doping-concentration on the near-infrared quantum cutting and transfer efficiencies has been investigated. A possible mechanism of the near-infrared quantum cutting phenomenon has been proposed based on the measured luminescence spectra and decay lifetimes. The results demonstrate the potential prospect towards the development of Tb3 + - Yb3 + , Tm3 + - Yb3 + and Pr3 + - Yb3 + dual ions based quantum cutting nanophosphors in order to realize high efficiency silicon-based solar cells.
