Intense Visible Upconversion Luminescence of Rare Earth Niobate Phosphors
Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped rare earth niobate phosphors have been prepared by means of conventional solid state synthesis in the air. The structures of YNbO4: Er, Yb, LaNbO4: Er, Yb and GdNbO4 : Er, Yb were characterized by XRD. Their normal and upconversion luminescent spectra with excitation of xenon arc lamp and 980 nm laser diodes have comparatively studied. The Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped rare earth niobate phosphors show intense green and weak red emissions, which are respectively originated from the typical transitions 2H11/2, 4S3/2 -4I15/2 and 4F9/2-4I15/2 of Er3+. The weak blue emission at about 409 nm, 415 nm and 480 nm are respectively associated with the transitions of Er3+ from excited states 2H9/2 , 4F5/2 and 4F7/2 to ground state 4I15/2, indicating the rare earth niobates possess low phonon-energy. The influence of the Er3 + and Yb3+ concentration on the upconversion intensity of Er3+ in YNbO4 has been investigated. The mechanisms of the upconversion luminescence of Er3+ have been proposed.
