On the Mechanical Behavior of Photo-patterned Spacers
The mechanical behavior of photo-patterned spacers has been investigated by utilizing nano-indentation and micro-hardness measurement. A color filter substrate including photo-patterned spacers has been fabricated in the fabrication laboratory of LG Chem, Ltd. It has been revealed that the mechanical behavior of photo-patterned spacers on a polymer-based multi-layer system is affected easily by the mechanical properties of underlying layers. For example, photo-spacers on resin-based black matrices are more sensitive to indentation load and seem more plastic than those on chromium-based black matrices. In addition, change in temperature has been found to influence the indentation behavior. With increasing temperature, photo-spacer patterns become more vulnerable to external stress and hence less elastic. The results presented in this poster presentation will help provide more detailed and realistic explanations for the role of photo-patterned spacers in a liquid crystal display device while people are watching it.
