Enhancement of Electro-optical Performance of Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Films with Copolymer
Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films, which are attractive for display devices and smart windows due to no polarizers or alignment films, are composed of micro-size liquid crystal droplets dispersed in a continuous polymer matrix. In diis letter, we attempt to prepare the polystyrene-block-poly (methyl acrylate) (PS-b-PMA) copolymer in situ. The results showed that the copolymer was synthesized successfully by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The electro-optical properties of PDLC films prepared by RAFT were enhanced for the copolymer with designed refractive index; while the PDLC films prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) hardly show electro-optical response because the blend of PS and PMA is heterogeneous and opaque.
