Solid Visual-sensation Display: A Novel 3D Object Presentation Tool for Human Computer Interaction

Three-dimensional Display, as user graphical interface, is a critical component of human computer interaction system. In this paper, we present a state-of-theart solid visual-sensation display. The device of the present invention relies on the human persistence of vision to fuse a time-series of regions of the ultimate 3D region into a single hologram like 3D aerial image. We discuss it mainly consists of: inexpensive standard, off-the-shelf hardware electronic components for user to easy operate with several equal or different projection units in parallel, as well as a software control platform which deliver native and legacy 2D and 3D content to volumetric displays. This setup makes it a powerful and flexible tool to re-image 3D object created by standard modeling applications, such as CAD, and the extensible display also allow die consumer to manipulate floating images using a mouse, which can be inverted or rotated 360 degree to offer detailed, three dimensional, virtual experiences. Finally, we present some example applications of solid visual sensation display with complex 3D interaction requirements and make a discussion of its most important advantages and disadvantages with respect to the use of traditional 2D interaction styles in 3D environments.
