Optimal Carbon Nanotube and Its Array as Emitters
It has been widely accepted that the exceeding emission ability of CNT comes from its sharp tip and large aspect ratio. While Kim et al. reveals that the geometrical shape is not the real reason for CNTs emission ability. The emission current depends on the local density of states (DOS) at the tip carbon atoms under outer electric field. The integration of DOS stands for the emission ability of tip carbon atoms. Open ended CNT holds a much better tip atom emission ability than closed ended CNT. Anyway, closed ended CNTs tip atoms emission ablity increases much faster than open ended CNTs. The whole tubes emission ability is illustrated in Fig. 1.
