Visual property of people with low vision (1): Span of color similarity

In this study, spans of color similarity in Munsell Color Space (MCS) were measured by using a criterion of similarity or the same of color appearance. Sixteen reference colors including fundamental colors specified in the categorical colors theory were used. Low vision patients were asked to evaluate similarity between test and reference colors that were then used to generate similarity data. The data were measured under in a photopic (500 lx) and mesopic (3 lx) viewing conditions. Unlike young unimpaired subjects, the span of reference colors are broader for low vision patients under both photopic and mesopic conditions. Interestingly, in low vision patients, although a high percentage of similar or the same colors were observed wrthin the span for unimpaired young subjects, the remaining colors spread to the almost whole color area, which is more prominent under dark conditions. The data will be developed as a database for spans of colors that could be applied to color combinations to facilitate easy discrimination and identification for low vision subjects.
