Research of the Influence of Neutral Background on Color Appearance
Presently, researching the color appearance is an important direction of international color science1. Its aim is realizing the faithful transfer and reproduction of color information among different medias, and forecasting the reaction of color vision formatted in human being, when the stimulator is viewed in complex viewing condition (lighting condition, background, and field).The subject of this task is to investigate the influence of the variety of neutral background on color appearance. In the experiment, two eyes contemporary observation was adopted, witch separated the CRT display into two adjacent fields, left and right, and all filled with neutral color regarded as two backgrounds, the centre of left fields was object color and the right was matching color. The original state of the experiment was to set the two fields have the same background, the object color and the matching color was the same. Then the lightness of the background of matching color would be changed regularly, and then the object color and matching color would dismatched, adjusted the matching color until it matches with the object color again, then the values of matching color should be measured and recorded. In experiment, the background of matching color was the neutral with different lightness, the object colors were designed with eight different colors with the same chroma. In this experiment, the neutral background not only have the effect on the colors1 lightness but also on their hue and saturation; besides the colors lightness result from two aspects, one is the lightness of neutral backgrounds, another is the lightness of the color itself. By analysising the results of the experiment, and with data process ing, a lightness formula to forecast the influence of neutral background on color appearance had been established.
