Color image preference to aged and young observers

Color image preference of different age groups was investigated with different modified versions of photorealistic images using a computer driven CRT monitor in a controlled experimental situation. Test images were manipulated using special digital imaging algorithms affecting such image characteristics as the general and local lightness contrast, white point, average chroma and several colorization techniques quantified in CIECAM02. Using the method of paired comparisons, significant differences were detected between young and aged observers preference. Concerning the known aging process of the human visual system, some of these results seemed logical (e.g. elderly people needed more contrast) but e.g. for the colorization elderly observers seemed to prefer the increased yellow content of images compared to the requirement of the young which contradicts the predictions.
