Evaluation of space brightness based on the border luminance of color appearance mode
We propose a measurement method for evaluating space brightness by measuring border luminance. Border luminance is the transition point of the color appearance mode. It is where natural object color mode changes to unnatural object color mode. The purpose of this paper is to verify that perceived brightness of a room is uniquely determined by border luminance. We also examined the correlation between change in the magnitude of space brightness and change of the border luminance. If the border luminance was the same even though the illuminance of the room or the configuration of interior surface reflectance was different, the matched illuminance was the same. The brightness value obtained by magnitude estimation method was proportional to the 0.56-th power of the border luminance. Hence measuring border luminance is effective method to evaluate space brightness quantitatively.
